This Autumn, Caroline Walker’s series of paintings, titled Home will be exhibited at Art Exchange in Colchester.

Walker’s series was commissioned for our opening exhibition, Actions. The image of the world can be different. The paintings offer the viewer a less familiar portrayal of the refugee crisis. In collaboration with Kettle’s Yard and the charity Women for Refugee Women, Walker met and photographed five women living in temporary accommodation, before making paintings of each in her studio.

The artworks show women isolated within domestic spaces, a subject that Walker often paints. Like all of her work, they depict women in contemporary environments but the locations in Home are a stark contrast to her usual scenes, of luxury nail salons or villas. In the isolation, and intimate environments, there is a new, more personal factor to the portraits in Home.

In the Actions catalogue Walker says “The collaboration with Women for Refugee Women has been transformative to my practice, first and foremost because it has led me to engage with the women I’m painting on a personal and specific level, to make paintings which take their individual lives as a starting point.”

CAROLINE WALKER: HOME, a Kettle’s Yard touring exhibition, will be on display at Art Exchange from Wednesday, 26 September 2018 until Saturday, 3 November.
