Circuit Conductors, our creative training programme for young people, has been running since May. The group have had workshops and talks from several arts and cultural professionals, gaining unique insights into the industry.
Rhiannon Moxham, a member of Circuit Conductors, shares her thoughts following their successful social workshop:
To celebrate the completion of the Circuit Conductors training programme we ran a sculpture and drawing workshop for the Circuit Social at Wysing Arts Centre. We asked participants the question – can you draw without a pencil? Utilising all of the skills we had learnt throughout the course such as evaluation methods, marketing techniques and how to develop our creative ideas into something deliverable, the event was a fantastic way to see all of our hard work pay off.
Taking inspiration from works in the Kettle’s Yard collection such as George Braque’s print ‘Le Cygne Volant’ (late 1950s) the sculpture activity used wire to create bird like structures. Tissue paper could then be dipped in PVA glue and used to add form to the sculptures by draping it over the wire. Once created, the bird-like works were suspended all together – a really effective way of displaying everybody’s amazing pieces.
For the collaborative drawing workshop, participants began by making drawings through tracing over imagery from the Kettle’s Yard collection using marker pens and collaging different coloured acetate, and using tape to mask off areas. The drawings and collages were placed onto the overhead projector, scaling them up onto a large piece of paper on the wall. These were then used to create a larger drawing with paint, pen and tape. Using one large surface and sharing each others’ original drawings as guides meant there was an emphasis on the process rather than the outcome, which led to a fantastic and surprising result.
Can you draw without a pencil? Absolutely!
