9 February marked a major milestone for our new building as construction reached its highest point. To celebrate this, a Topping Out Ceremony was held by the contractors, SDC, with guests from the University of Cambridge, Kettle’s Yard and major funders of the scheme; Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund and Cambridge City Council. As the spaces are taking shape, there is a tangible sense of the new Kettle’s Yard, and it was great to share the experience. Read more about the day here.
Despite the stormy weather in the last few weeks, work on the site continues to develop. The roof is on, and rooflights are being fitted in Gallery Two and across the second storey, meaning the building is now watertight and weathertight. The builders are making good progress pouring the concrete floors and putting up partition walls – and expect to take down the blue crane in April. Work installing electrics has begun and we continue to work closely with architect Jamie Fobert on the finishes and fittings for our shop and café.
Although not often everyone’s favourite month, February has been the most exciting time yet for the Kettle’s Yard development.
