Our work of the week is Pastorale (1969) by Barbara Hepworth, currently on show in Being Modern at the Fitzwilliam Museum. The print shares its name with an earlier sculpture that Hepworth made in 1953 which was directly carved in marble with flowing surfaces that only hint at the presence of a figure. Hepworth made a number of prints between 1969 and 1971 using screenprint and lithograph techniques. She explained how she used these processes to work on ideas which would eventually translate into sculpture, achieving an abstract sense of space, form and texture through the use of transparent smooth layers and bold mark-making.
