Is it possible to feel sympathy for a box of screws or a lemon? Calderwood knows how much stress a lemon, wine glass or a steel beam can take. He’s tested it. Using a vocabulary of commonplace objects, his work often contains the potential for disaster. There are no rehearsals; he only makes or performs something once. In the process of exploring the physical properties of ordinary things, Calderwood opens up emotional as well as intellectual responses to objects.
