11 June 2020

We were very sad to have to cancel the rest of our New Music 2020 series. Whilst we have been closed, New Music Curator Tom McKinney has been in contact with the musicians whose concerts couldn’t take place, and we’re pleased to share with you some films and music from them. We hope you can continue to enjoy New Music from home, and look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

First, we are sharing content from the flautist, Kathryn Williams, who was due to perform at Kettle’s Yard this June.

Watch an introduction from Tom McKinney here.

Unity Capsule by Brian Ferneyhough

One of the pieces Kathryn was going to play in her concert at Kettle’s Yard was ‘Unity Capsule’ for solo flute by Brian Ferneyhough. In this video, produced especially for Kettle’s Yard, find out more about how the piece is played.

Coming Up For Air Project

This project explores the creative possibilities that emerge when musical pieces are limited to the performance of a single breath.

You can find out more about the project and listen to some of the pieces created here.

PIXERCISE Project

Watch a film of Kathryn Williams completing a HIIT workout whilst playing piccolo flute. PIXERCISE was originally a single-breath piece by Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh for Kathryn’s Coming Up for Air project.
