Although known chiefly as a leading abstract sculptor and painter, and a regular at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, John Carter is increasingly celebrated for his printmaking. He had his first solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in 1968 and has since exhibited widely in Europe, Japan and the USA; a solo exhibition of his work was held at the Royal Academy in 2013, entitled John Carter RA: Between Dimensions. John Carter currently has an exhibition ‘Sight Lines’ at Jerwood Gallery, on until 9 June 2019. The exhibition covers his work over the last 50 years.

Carter experiments with abstract constructions, which we can see in this print, ‘Identical Shapes: Green’. About his work, he says ‘one of the most important aspects of my work [is] the idea of a stable form in conjunction with one which is very slightly disturbed. Set at an angle, perhaps. You are not quite certain what has happened, but you are aware that what you are looking at is not an absolutely regular situation and that some disruption, some disturbance, perhaps very slight, is taking place.’

Carter has kindly donated this print as a gift to the Friends of Kettle’s Yard and any surplus will be used to support the Gallery. Copies are available to the public at £495 framed and £435 unframed. The print is on display in the café/shop at Kettle’s Yard.
