About the artist

Ernst was born in Bruehl, near Cologne, Germany. After studying philosophy in Bonn, in 1913 he went to Paris, where he met many of the leading avant-garde artists. Ernst was instrumental in the development of Surrealism in Germany, following its beginnings in Switzerland and Paris. He helped to organise the first Surrealist exhibition in Paris in 1925 and became one of the group's internationally known members. After World War II he moved to the United States.
