This special tour will complement the new exhibition Alfred Wallis Rediscovered. The tour explores the display of Alfred Wallis and related artists work in the House. We will spend most of the tour in the House and then finish in the gallery in the Alfred Wallis exhibition.
Alfred Wallis started life as a mariner and it was only in later life in Cornwall that he took up painting. His instinctive paintings, using the materials that came to hand, now form a major part of the collection at Kettle’s Yard. On the tour we will consider Wallis’ life and times, explore his paintings in greater depth and consider his use of colour, materials and subject matter. We will look at connections with other artists in the collection such as Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood as well as the impact of Wallis’ intuitive art on Jim. The letters between Wallis and Jim are testimony to their friendship: you will have an opportunity to see some examples of items not usually on show to the public.
The Alfred Wallis Tour will finish in the galleries, where you are then welcome to stay and further explore the exhibition on your own.
Join us for an exciting opportunity to experience the Kettle’s Yard House before we open to the public. Your group will have a private, in depth experience with one of our knowledgeable Visitor Assistants, as they guide you through the House, telling you more about the history of Kettle’s Yard and some of the objects and artworks on display.
The House is not fully accessible and this tour includes climbing the spiral staircase in the cottage as well as crossing several other stepped levels. The extension to the House is fully accessible and we are happy to accommodate all visitors wishing to join us on a guided tour. If you wish to book an accessible guided tour we ask that you contact us in advance of booking. Please call 01223 748100 or email email@example.com to discuss this with us and to find out more.
The galleries are fully accessible.
