Linda Karshan is one of the very few artists who have made their reputation solely by drawing. Born in America, of Romanian origins, she has lived in London since 1969, returning to art after studies in psychology.
Her drawings derive from simple procedures of rhythmic repetition, creating grids, rows and stacks. Minimal in their means and appearance, they are charged with an intuitive energy. She finds her kinship in the work of artists such as Philip Guston and Eva Hesse, whose exhibition at Tate Modern will overlap with this show.
This exhibition, her most comprehensive to date in the UK, will focus on recent drawings and prints in the context of the work of the last decade. It follows exhibitions this year at the Soane Museum and the Redfern Gallery, and a major retrospective at IVAM in Valencia.
