Join us for an online panel discussion with exhibition artist Sutapa Biswas, black feminist writer Lola Olufemi and writer and curator Gilane Tawadros. We will explore formal and conceptual considerations that are key to the language of Biswas’ art, whilst also looking at her contribution to the Black Arts Movement – a cluster of politicised artistic activities by artists of colour.
In this panel discussion we will ask questions about Sutapa Biswas’ engagement with the ways in which she explores questions of aesthetics in relations to histories of colonial violence, race, gender, and the collective ways of working that have been crucial to DIY art spaces.
This conversation will look at key themes in Biswas’ ongoing art practice, including in her new film Lumen (2021).

Spanning the artist’s extensive career, this will be the first substantial solo show in 14 years of British Indian artist Sutapa Biswas (b. 1962).
The show will foreground Biswas’s vital contributions to the Black Arts Movement in Britain and to the shifting understanding of post-war British art. Biswas’s works visually disrupt, challenge and reimagine our present time: visual theorist Griselda Pollock said that it was Biswas who ‘forced us all to acknowledge the Eurocentric limits of the discourses within which we practise’. Including the seminal Housewives with Steak-Knives (1985) and Kali (1984), the exhibition will also demonstrate the richness, diversity and conceptual continuity of the artist’s extended practice through the display of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and video.
Lola Olufemi is a black feminist writer and CREAM/Stuart Hall foundation researcher from London. Her work focuses on the uses of the feminist imagination and its relationship to cultural production, political demands and futurity. She is author of Feminism Interrupted: Disrupting Power (2020), Experiments in Imagining Otherwise, forthcoming from Hajar Press in 2021 and a member of ‘bare minimum’, an interdisciplinary anti-work arts collective.
Gilane Tawadros is a writer and curator. She was the founding Director of Iniva and is Chief Executive of DACS and Chair of the Stuart Hall Foundation. Her most recent book The Sphinx Contemplating Napoleon: Global Perspectives on Contemporary Art and Difference is published by Bloomsbury.

This event series explores questions of race, gender and aesthetics which arise from Sutapa Biswas’ work and wider British black and Asian artmaking and organising. How can we draw sustenance from radical art histories? Can we think of grassroots organising as a creative practice? How can we work collectively and strategically to build liberated futures? We invite audiences interested in concerns of cultural memory, displacement, archive, power and language to engage in this dialogue held across panel discussions, sound experiments, film screenings, poetry readings, performances, craftivism and study. This series has been co-programmed by Sutapa Biswas, Alina Khakoo, Lola Olufemi, Jennifer Powell and Amy Tobin.
